In 1782, William Gilpin proposed a new aesthetic idea called the “Picturesque.” It served as an in-between state between the Burkean ideas of the Beauty and the Sublime. The Picturesque finds that what is the most pleasing to the eye is an object in a state of decay.
Needless to say, I think this Gilpin guy was a bro.
